When your baseball lineup is packed with five returning seniors, including two all-Southwest Ohio Conference honorees, a coach might feel a certain amount of confidence heading into the spring.

That’s what Little Miami Head Baseball Coach Matt Craig has this year. The Panthers return seniors Jake Shirey, Mason Walker, Reed Newman, Jake Gevedon and Jason Eversole. Shirey was named second-team all-SWOC last year, and Gevedon was honorable mention. Both were consistent offensive threats, batting in the mid-.300 range.

Although they finished with a winning 12-10 overall record, Craig, who is in his seventh season at Little Miami, said his team will be looking to improve on their 4th place finish in the league.

“(We’re just looking) to get better everyday as a team and as individuals,” he said. The main goal this year: “Win the SWOC.”

Standing between the Panthers and that league title will be two tough squads: Harrison and Ross.

“They always have very good baseball programs,” Craig said.

Craig knows good athletes when he sees them, because he has is own experience to fall back on. Craig was recently inducted into the Little Miami Athletic Hall of Fame for the impressive performances he turned in wearing a Panther uniform. He was a first team, all-Fort Ancient Valley Conference honoree for multiple seasons in both baseball and basketball. He went on to play outfield for Bowling Green State University, and helped the Falcons capture the Mid-American Conference Championship in 1995 and 1998.

Craig and the Panthers open their regular season with a doubleheader on the road at Wilmington on Mar. 24.
