The Little Miami Panthers varsity football team will begin looking for a new leader for the 2019 season after the program’s head coach announced his departure Wednesday.

Nate Mahon announced to his players that he would be accepting the head football coaching position at Hamilton High School.

Mahon had just completed his third season with Little Miami, compiling an 8-2 Southwest Ohio Conference record and leading the Panthers to their first playoff appearance since 1992.

“I did meet with the football team this afternoon and inform them that I am stepping down as head football coach,” Mahon said in an email to the Little Miami High School staff.  “I will be taking a position at Hamilton High School, my alma mater, at the end of the school year. I greatly appreciate your support of our young men and the Little Miami football program. ”

LM Athletic Director Keith Pantling said that while he was disappointed to see Mahon leave, the coach had left the program greatly improved.

“It’s a great opportunity for Nate and his family, back home where he played and went to school,” Pantling said. “He’s leaving us in favorable position to continue building a perennially competitive program with the strong culture he’s established.

“Little Miami is a very desirable place to be right now.”

Pantling said the search for a new head coach would begin immediately. Current LM defensive coordinator Caleb Jones is now serving as interim head coach.

“We’re fortunate to have Coach Jones here,” Pantling said. “He's a tremendous and well-respected teacher and coach who’s been a huge part of the programs recent success serving as defensive coordinator the past three seasons.”

Mahon amassed a 19-13 record at Little Miami, and took on a team that had only three wins in three years prior to him coming on board in 2016. Mahon had previously been head coach at Northwest where he accumulated a record of 21-12 overall in three seasons.

Mahon is a 2003 Hamilton High School grad and was inducted into their athletic hall of fame in 2017. Mahon will continue to serve as Little Miami High School assistant principal until the end of the 2018-19 school year.
