A Little Miami High School senior athlete with a heartbreaking personal story was recently awarded a top scholarship from the Anthony Muñoz Foundation.

Hunter Fletcher was named the 2019 Muñoz Foundation Straight “A” Scholarship winner out of 18 finalists from Cincinnati area high schools. Fletcher was just 15 when he witnessed the shooting death of his mother Traci Fletcher-Garrett at the hand of his stepfather David Garrett in 2016. Garrett also took his own life that day, a day that Fletcher said changed him forever.

“This setback in my life taught me that healing takes time and it really showed me a lot about myself as a person and how strong and determined I can be to succeed,” he wrote in his scholarship application.

At Little Miami, Fletcher is a member of the football, track and field and wrestling teams with a 3.5 GPA his senior year. He has received the Tom Potter National Courage Award and the Freshman MVP Award from the National Football Foundation. Fletcher also has a passion for serving his community and volunteers with the local youth football league and other community events like Bray Bowl and the Little Miami Band Festival. Hunter recently signed to continue his football career with Wittenberg University, studying Criminology in the fall.

“The reason I find the word perseverance coming to mind as the most important lesson is because it took time and hard work to get past the hardship that I went through and I’m still working on processing my grief,” he wrote. “I learned that the obstacles I face in life won’t stop me from succeeding if I persevere and push through it.”

The Straight “A” Scholarship program rewards students who are pursuing academic excellence, athletic achievement, are actively serving in the community while possessing a strong ambition, a winning attitude and the ability to overcome adversity.

Fletcher received a $2,000 scholarship for being named a finalist and as the 2019 winner, received an additional $3,000 scholarship for a total of $5,000.
